Ateneo Glee Club, a reunion after 3 decades!

Submitted by maan on Wed, 11/19/2008 - 04:34.

After more than three decades, we then met our former Conductor Noel Velasco, now based in Rhode Island, USA and a famous international Opera Singer. He is the Luciano Pavarotti of the Philippines.

He was invited by UP for its centennial this year thats is why he has a very brief stay in the country. Hastily we tried organizing a get together of the former Ateneo Glee Club members during Noel's time and voila, many of us made it!

Lella was in a quandary since her community had an emergency meeting but I told her we havent seen Noel in decades! Heck Guballa and Madix Miclat, both now with Ateneo, made it despite learning only the day before.  I requested Tina de Guzman to do the coordinating as I was busy with a conference. Later she realized she couldnt make it because she had to be in Laguna till friday morning for the anniversary of their rural bank. Carla Siojo graciously took over. Carla and Manolet Siojo (who did the solo of Pippin) seemed the only couple in Glee Club who made it to the altar.

Lin Bengson Liboro was able to join us. I told the group that Lin used to be my teacher at Alliance Francaise :)

Reggie Angangco (of The Firm) went straight from the airport to Greg Domingo's house who offered to host our reunion. Greg was the former governor of BOI and DTI undersecretary during the time of Sen. Mar Roxas. Reggoe  just got in from Italy.  Frank Guerra couldn't make it as he was in Korea but he called so he can talk to some of us esp Noel.

Too bad Toby Dayrit, now the Ateneo Dean for Environmental Science just flew to Germany.  Toby and Frank thought Noel will stay  longer but can't so missed the rare occasion.

It was good to reminisce the good old days specially recalling the time we won 1st place with Ryan Cayabyab's arrangement of "Don't You Worry About a Thing" and Jose Mari Chan as one of the judges in "Melody Fair" held at Meralco Theater.

Actually, we would have sung Ryan's "Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig" but it was darn too hard for us!

We all wondered how we passed the audition then :)

Bobby Cheng of the former Flipside group, rendered a song "People", accompanied by his wife Carol.  Greg had to bring down their keyboard because surely we can't all leave without everyone singing!

Below are the two videos I tried to take with my camera and phone:

Hi Maan,

AGC ka pala! :-D Talagang no reunion is complete without singing. Ang saya diba?!

Was wondering why Ms. Caroline Cheng was in the picture.. yun pala hubby was an alumni. Most of the AGC people I know were the ones handled by Jojo Velasco / Joel Navarro na and most of them are members of the ACS na now.

Anyway, Noel Velasco is the father of 2 of my music friends.. one in UPCC, the other in SMMC. Small world talaga.. :-D
