TODAY'S TIDBIT:
“Her children arise and call her blessed…” – Proverbs 31:28
Being a mother can be a thankless job. Most days I don’t know if what I do for my kids is appreciated. Or if it makes a difference in the way they are growing up. I take heart in the story of Tita Mely, a senior member of our community.
She shared that when they were growing up, she and her many siblings thought that their mother’s favorite part of a chicken was its neck. Every time chicken is served in their home, this is the only part she would eat. They thought she was pretty weird for this particular liking.
It was only when Tita Mely became a mother herself that she realized the truth. Her mother was giving up the best parts of the chicken for her children to enjoy. With such a big brood to feed, this was all that she allowed herself to have.
With this insight, she became a better parent by honoring and following her mother’s example. This legacy of love made it possible for her to raise her own children to be good people. They, in turn, are bringing up their children “Chicken-neck” style. Maybe not materially, as they are better off than their grandmother, but in the sacrifices that they make for their offspring.
