In my Cadillacad...

Submitted by schizoprano on Wed, 11/19/2008 - 03:46.

My car was "coded" today, so I couldn't bring it to Makati. Alternative: take a cab or take the MRT. I had to bring my Cadillacad.

So, I walked from my house, waited a bit for a cab but ended up taking the trike, alighted from it and walked again, and waited a bit again in case a cab materializes... no such luck... hmmmn.. i'ts getting hotter... I walk again, much faster now, until I get to the MRT station. The escalators weren't working, so I had to climb up the stairs... and it wasn't just a few steps.. that was a lot of steps. I finally get on the MRT... and stand the whole time, holding on to those leatherette thingies while fanning myself non-stop (yes, the airconditioning was on, but I was very warmed up...)

En route to my destination, the train has a technical problem.. and it stops! As in STOPS! Engine off, doors can't open.. aircons off! Oh no!!! More paypay! And worry.. "baka ma-late ako!.. I should have waited for a cab.. etc.. etc. " After a couple of prayers, the train's engine started again, and we continued on our journey. Phwew! I got off at the Ayala Station because I was going to Onstage at Greenbelt to catch the 1030am show of MULAN... and walk some more I did, and in much more haste now so that I will get there on time! So.. thru SM Makati, then Glorietta, then Landmark.. then Greenbelt 3.. and finally.. Greenbelt 1! By the time I got to Greenbelt, I was so warmed up, I would have been ready to go onstage with the performers already.. ha ha ha Good thing I had a towel to put on my back. I did make it on time! The show was great! And I enjoyed myself immensely... this is something my nieces would enjoy!

After the show, more walking to go back to the MRT, but at a slower pace.. and with a quick lunch break to assuage hunger pangs, recharge and do some window shopping while I walk back to the MRT station. A male friend once told me never to go shopping (grocery or whatever) when I'm hungry... it makes one buy more! And I've always kept that in mind... because I noticed it did have some truth to it.

I bought some supplies at National bookstore, walked some more, downed a bottle of water to rehydrate and walked again till I got to my trike station... and finally got home!

It wasn't the end of my day.. I did some work first... then, went malling with my mom, a sis, 3 nieces and the 1yr old nephew plus yaya in the evening in one of the less crowded malls in our area... but ended up carrying my nephew for the more than 2 hrs we were there until we met up with their mom, the other sis.

Got home, conked out (some kindda glad that those weren't my kids... and I could just leave them with their own parents na... he he)... now awake again. Phwew!

I just realized how much "walking" I used to do on a regular basis when I was in highschool (because I commuted to my school in Diliman even in hs), in college, working at an office, and even much later when I was doing freelance work, and rehearsing in theater... When I was in CCP, sometimes, we'd end up walking from CCP to Taft! It was all walking and commuting. And when I walk, I walk fast! I lost these "opportunities for walking" on my 2nd year of working again in an office, when I started to drive a car again, because the job needed that I go places at times with some of the merchandise (imagine lugging around a cello or several violins while commuting to Alabang! That's kindda takaw hold-up and very physically taxing, right?). That plus office stress, and fastfood eaten way past lunchtime... bad habits... wow... no wonder I ended up with more love handles and white hairs than necessary! Am glad that now I've been back to freelance mode for the last year or so... it's great because I SUPPOSEDLY have more control about how I use my time (*guffaws*)... well, supposedly... I haven't been walking that often still... but today's exertions kindda reminded me again that I have to do more walking again... I need to re-use my Kadilakad more often...

Cadillacad

Wow, that was a lot of walking! I love to walk but in this kind of weather, hmmm....I'd rather take a ride or I'll get asthma attack. If only we have cooler weather, I will walk everyday and I will be slimmer pa. When I was in my teens, distance was not a problem, we walked to practically any destination. There was considerably less pollution and when you're with friends, chatting and laughing, no destination is too far.  :-)

super pagod

Hi naypi2008.

Yes, it is kindda difficult to be walking a lot in this kind of weather... the heat and humidity is energy-zapping! Mabuti na lang, I was walking through malls for the most part... but since I was fast-walking.. oh my.. I could feel the burn! Init-lamig... uh-oh.. and sagad-butong pagod!

And when you get used to being in an airconditioned car, it is more difficult pa if you have to jockey for position inside the MRT (and have the tough luck of not being nakatapat sa aircon) or be kept waiting inside the jeepney while the barker calls for passengers to fill it up before the jeepney finally travels its route (really bad in the Buendia jeepney pila near the Shell station.. the air is so still!)

It's always nice naman talaga to be walking with friends.. leisurely pace, with halong chismis pa yan.. so, it's very enjoyable... and we don't notice as much that we are getting tired. :-D

Good point about the "less pollution". Now, if you walk along EDSA too long, with all those buses and cars giving out CO... by the time you get home, you've got free spraynet and black powder... (and probably blackened lungs as well) eeeeeeeeeeew! Kaya uso ang respiratory-related diseases even among children these days.. :-(
